At the beginning of September the Platelet Services team were delighted to attend Eurotox 2024, held at the Tivoli Hotel and Congress Centre in Copenhagen. This was the first time the team had attended the event organised by the Danish Society of Toxicology and Pharmacology and it did not disappoint!
Eurotox 2024 included a packed schedule of keynote lectures, multiple parallel oral presentation sessions, posters, industry discussions and workshops spread across four days. The opening ceremony featured a performance from Jonas Rasmussen, Danish singer and Eurovision Song Contest 2018 competitor, and a montage of Scandinavian natural beauty framed the first keynote lecture, an epidemiological review of pFAS toxicology.
The conference was hugely popular with registration closing early and a long waiting list for exhibition booths. Over the course of the congress, the team had many interesting and mutually beneficial discussions at the Platelet Services booth, making new connections which will hopefully lead to future collaborations.
The Platelet Services team was pleased to present a poster on “De-risking new cancer therapeutics with in vitro platelet assays: comparing the effects of BH3-mimetics on platelet viability”. Following the session the poster was moved to be displayed at the Platelet Services booth, which proved to attract attendees to the stand and initiate insightful discussions. Another popular addition to the booth was the platelet puzzle, with the attendee who was able to put it together the fastest winning a set of Lego London landmarks.
Environmental, regulatory and non-animal new approach methodologies (NAMs) were a recurrent theme for oral presentations across the conference. The challenges involved with the preclinical development of antibody drug conjugates (ADCs) were discussed within the Evotec Group hosted session, a topic of great interest to Platelet Services. Other programmes incorporated many non-animal NAM studies including the advances in brain organoid intelligence, whereby in vitro brain organoid electrophysiology recording is behind a vision to redefine disease modelling and neurotoxicity testing.
The drive to change legislation, moving from animal studies to non-animal NAMs in drug research and development toxicology, was a key theme at Eurotox 2024. The in vitro studies offered by Platelet Services play an important contribution to the 3Rs of animal research, replacement, reduction and refinement.
